Learn how to sew things you didn't know you needed - until now!

Four marvellous reasons to break out this sewing machine, as we present to you some of our favourite how-tos from sewing land.

This lot should keep you going for a while – and there’s something for everyone – of any ability.

How to have fun with your sewing machine…

Fabric scrap bowl tutorials

A great place to start is the Radiant Home Studio website and an excellent piece by Sara Curtis.

A terrific way of using up fabric scraps along with some cording rope. The results are amazing – especially if you co-ordinate your colours well.

There’s a strange hypnotic pleasure with this activity – as Sara says,

“I really enjoyed choosing the coordinating fabric strips, and I found the repetitive wrapping and sewing motion a relaxing afternoon project.”

As an extra special bonus, there are also links to some of Sara’s favourite scrap bowl how-tos.

Top tip: you need to be in control of your zig zag stitch!

How to sew an infinity scarf

This is gorgeous – and you’ll wonder how you ever managed with this classy accessory – especially as the weather’s steadfastly refusing to acknowledge that it’s actually Spring!

Courtesy of the Sew Me Something website, this detailed tutorial will get you up and running in no time! It’s no more involved than it needs to be – and the excellent step-by-step photos make everything abundantly clear.

Top tip: “Edge stitch along the folded under seam allowance. This is called an overlaid seam and is the same as the ones you find on jeans. It’s very strong and ideal for enclosing all the raw edges.”

Patternless slouchy cardigan with box pleat back

And for those of you who have given up on the warm weather ever arriving, here’s a delightful – and easy – project, from the Minerva Crafts website, which was posted by knitwitsOwls.

Everything you need is there in this well written and illustrated piece that will get you up and running in no time.

The good news: it’s great for people who aren’t very experienced with sewing knit fabrics.

Monogrammed device case: the travel trio

Adding your own personal logo to your travel accessories – why didn’t we think of that? Wow!

One of the most eye catching collections we’ve seen of late, this very stylish laptop bag, courtesy of the Sew4home website is one of three in the series which also covers a bag and purse.

Project editor Liz Johnson suggests that the best tools for the job are:-

  • A sewing bachine and standard presser foot
  • An embroidery machine, which is optional for the monogram
  • An edge guide foot or similar.

Contact Sew and Craft if you need any advice on these.

Top tip: “When selecting fabric for this type of travel set, you want something that’s tough enough to stand-up to heavy use and easy to spot clean, but is still soft to handle and with a bold motif that takes advantage of the larger panels.”
