The importance of preparation
We’re often asked at GUR about sewing machine embroidery hoops – and why people have mixed results with them.
So we thought we’d draw to your attention some of our favourite articles, beginning with useful techniques, the basics of hooping and finishing with a really amazing piece of towel embroidery. Enjoy…
Starting with embroidery hoops
There’s a really good introduction to embroidery hoops on the Burley Sew YouTube channel – a great resource for any number of “how-tos” including How to use the embroidery hoop for a home embroidery and sewing machine – hooping tutorial (beginner).
This video shows how use the embroidery hoop for a home embroidery and sewing machine. It also covers the use of different types of embroidery stabilisers and spray adhesive.
Marking and hooping
Hooping has been described as “the least understood” component of embroidery. This excellent introduction by Kay Hickman has been around for a few years – but it is such an important element of embroidery: it’s worth getting this vital basic technique right.
Kay’s article on the We all sew website is called Embroidery basics: marking and hooping your projects.
“A lot of the embroidery “mistakes” that we tend to blame on stabilizers or designs may actually be a result of improper hooping techniques.”
Machine appliqué and embroidery
This particular offering from the Diaperswappers website (bear with us on this…) is a first-rate example of how well a tutorial should be presented.
What you’ll need, step-by-step instructions and really clear photos showing the machine appliquéing of a small onesie. Delightful!
Embroidering on towels
We thought we’d finish this piece with something that really does have the “wow!” factor. It’s a showcase for some really inspirational work called Fabrics 101: embroidering on terrycloth towels on the Embroidery Library website.
This particular tutorial states
“Learn the best how-to information for stabilizing, hooping, and topping, so that your embroidered towels turn out beautifully.”
The results in this particular piece are stunning – check them out!
