Get into the Christmas mood with these sewing tips

Christmas sewing tips

Get that music on and break out the mince pies!

This is about the time of year when the more organised amongst you will already have those Christmas decorations sorted. Whether you go for a quietly confident colour co-ordinated theme, or prefer a riot of festive colour, there’s no doubt that the inclusion of hand crafted additions can enhance any seasonal display.

So we thought we’d have a good sort through some of our favourite online festive fun to come up with a combination of decorations, presents and wonderful gift presentation ideas.

An easy Christmas stocking pattern

This is an ideal way to ease yourself into the Christmas sewing zone, courtesy of Amber on the Crazy Little Project website.

Stockings to hang or give as a gift – or containing gifts. A fun and easy project that typically takes under ten minutes per item. It’s fun and they look great!

We like: “I started at 11:31 and was finished by 11:39. And that’s while watching Gilmore Girls too! So, here you have it, a very free, easy Christmas stocking pattern and tutorial!”

Wine gift bag tutorial

You’ll need 2 pieces of fabric measuring 6.5” x 16” for the bag and one piece of 36” x 3” for the tie in this interesting improvement on the card shop shiny paper wine gift bags that are so common these days!

Easy to follow step-by-step guide with plenty of clear photographs from the Tie Dye Diva blog.

Look out for: “Form the gussets. Pinch the bottom of the bag on both sides of the bottom seam and pull the front and back layers apart. Line up the bottom seam with the side seam, forming a little triangle as you do so.”

No binding quilted place mats and coasters

These look so classy – but bear in mind that the outcome depends on the “wow” factor of the materials that you choose.

“I used a solid fabric (to keep the directions clear), but a beautiful print fabric would be better” advises this excellent Geta’s Quilting Studio tutorial.

The best bit: “Quilted placemates and coasters are quick projects to sew. I bet you will love making them even more if there is a “no-binding” option.”

Patchwork infinity scarf

One of our favourite Christmas present ideas here for you, courtesy of the wonderful Man Sewing with Rob Appell website. This is the first time that we’ve featured a contribution from this terrific source.

The online video is really clear and helpful, using several different camera angles in order to give you the best possible view of everything that you need to see.

The video and downloadable PDF can be found here.

What’s best about this: “I love making handmade gifts for my friends and family, but it can be a struggle to come up with something cool for the hard-to-buy-for crowd. But this year, I’ve got a pretty good solution!”

Have fun – and have a wonderful Christmas!
