Vicki proves that her old sewing machine is “perfect for quarter inch seams”

Vicki Howard's quilt took 18 months to complete

This highly personal quilt took 18 months to complete – but wasn’t it worth it!

“There’s many a good tune played on an old fiddle” is a common enough phrase – and it seems that sometimes that applies to older sewing machines as well!

Every now and again, we publish an example of interesting work undertaken by one of GUR’s wonderful customers, which they send to us via our Facebook Page. This particular quilting story was kindly sent in by Vicki Howard from Stevenage in Hertfordshire…

Quarter inch seams are a dream to do on an old sewing machine says Viki

“This is the quilt I made for my three old granddaughter: almost all of the blocks are ‘personal’ to me and her. For example we cook and ‘sew’ and garden together, hence the sewing machine, pin cushion, flowers, apron and spoon blocks.

“Her grandad was a Welsh farmer, hence the tractor block (and I could go on!). I brought the fabric in America, and sewed it on a pretty old Janome machine.

“Everyone in the monthly sewing class I go to has brand spanking new ones, but my quarter inch seams are a dream to do on the old machine!

“It’s vital for some of the pieced 6” blocks. It took about 18 months, on and off as I do work, but loved every minute of it.”
