Kathryn Manson lives in Leeds and it’s from there that she produces her adorable patchwork lions, which are proving to be – not surprisingly – hugely popular with her friends and family.
This is her story….
“I have been making keepsakes as a hobby for friends and family for many years, and started a Facebook Group called Blue Teddy to share my creations.
“I purchased my sewing cabinet from GUR Sewing Machines a few years ago, a Horn Maxi Outback, and I don’t know how I ever managed without it!
Her go-to sewing machine is made by Elna and Kat describes it as “a fantastic machine”.
Built in embroidery alphabet
“I’ve sewn the two lions on it from start to finish, utilising the built in embroidery alphabet to do the names on the lions feet.
“At the end of my sewing session I can just neatly pack everything away and fold the cabinet up ready for the next day.”
Using the right thread
“My top tip for successful embroidery is good thread. Strong quality thread is essential and I’m a particular fan of Gutermann, I find it works well with this machine.
“Another useful material not often associated with sewing is cardboard. Mounting the pattern on cardboard first makes it much easier to draw small pattern pieces directly onto the fabric and then cut them out – far better than trying to pin and cut tiny pieces of fabric.
“I hope you like the lions and that the top tips help out other keen stitchers and crafters!”

Memory keepsakes
Kathryn makes memory keepsakes from baby clothes and also loved ones’ clothes from those who have have sadly been lost, as well as christening gowns from wedding dresses.
“I make lots of different keepsakes to remind us of our most cherished people during the difficult and the happiest times of our lives” she added.
