The joy of learning a new craft
“It’s wonderful to see more men get into sewing” said Rick S. Mondeau when he got in touch with us recently at GUR Sewing Machines. He kindly sent us some photographs of one of his recent projects – a marvellous baby receiving blanket. In fact, it proved to be such a hit, that he’s supplying them to a number of other people!
And all this, despite the fact that he’s a relative newcomer to the noble art…
“I am a 54 year old man new to sewing and have found great joy in learning a new craft” said Rick, who comes from Gavinton in Berwickshire.
“It’s something that brings great pleasure and satisfaction to me. I also get an enormous thrill and sense of self worth in seeing my baby blankets in use by those I have gifted them to.”
This self binding baby receiving blanket is made with 100 % balloon cotton fabric on the outside and the inside consists of a lovely warm, cosy and cuddly fleece. It was produced with a Brother sewing and embroidery machine.
It’s sewn with the good sides facing together, then sewn with a ¼ inch seam allowance, leaving about a 6 inch opening to turn the blanket inside out.
“Once the blanket is turned out, I press the edges and making sure I have nice corner, and crisp edges before using a decorative stitch to close the opening. I then continue with the decorative stitch all the way around blanket to give it a lovely design” said Rick, who added that he uses Gutterman threads.
