Sewing tips: how to tackle zips without the fear!

Sewing tips. How to tackle zips without the fear!

We show you how to avoid zip-related stress!

One of the hardest aspects of sewing is fiddling about with zips – they’re often the wrong length, tricky to work with and there are a number of pitfalls that you need to avoid if you’re really going to enhance your sewing experience.

Fear not! We’ve had a trawl around internet land in an effort to help you take the stress out of sewing – and concentrate on the fun.

And this time, we unearthed one of the best tutorials we’ve seen in a while…

Enjoy!

Don’t fear the zips! Two easy zipper pouch tutorials

The perfect place to tackle any potential zipophobia with not one, but two beginner-friendly how-tos, courtesy of Pam from Clever Little Mouse, which can be enjoyed on the Kim Six Fix blog.

“I promise, if you can sew a straight line, you can make these pouches!” claims Pam, with every justification.

The pencil pouch is a super starting project and it’s followed by the marginally more challenging makeup pouch tutorial.

Watch out for: “Make sure the zipper is unzipped at least halfway before you proceed, or you won’t be able to turn the finished bags right side out!”

Video – How to sew an easy zipper sewing tutorial

If video lessons are more your sort of thing, you could do very much worse than having a look at this excellent example from Stitchless TV.

Dealing with how to sew a centred lapped zip (in this case on an A line skirt) is great fun.

We love: “It’s a little unconventional but really works.”

How to: sew invisible zipper

Two for the price of one here! A really good tutorial on the Made To Sew website with the option of a really brilliant video on the Made To Sew YouTube account.

It’s no exaggeration to state that these two top lessons combined form one of the most enjoyable and informative how-tos we’ve seen in a while! Highly recommended!

Invisible zips have such a huge number of uses from clothes such as dresses skirts and trousers, to all sorts of home furnishing projects.

Top tip: “If you plan to sew a lot of invisible zippers purchase an invisible zipper foot. The invisible zipper foot will make the process of sewing an invisible zipper MUCH easier.”

How to shorten zippers and make zipper tabs

And finally, here’s something that you will need to do on a zip sewing project at some stage – learn how to shorten a zip. You see – we don’t just throw these things together LOL.

So here’s a splendid example from the charming Apple Tree Cottage website.

It’s easy, fun and the end results are amazing!

We love: “…you won’t believe how easy it is!”
